In 2014, I worked on the innovative, number 1 bestselling, award-nominated app The Pointless Book App by Alfie Deyes. This was followed by its bestselling sequels The Pointless Book 2 App and the The Bumper Pointless Book App.
The first app of its kind to combine augmented reality, video content and Alfie’s unique humour this app signalled the start of a true publishing phenomenon – bestselling YouTubers. The Pointless Book App merges the interactivity of the book with technology and allows fans to see Alfie’s answers and watch exclusive never-before-seen videos and was short-listed for an innovation award in 2014.
With the The Pointless Book 2 App we wanted to raise the bar even higher adding innovate customisable 3D object reveals allowing users to generate their own designs and a Pointless selfie booth where they could pose with their hero Alfie Deyes and share these images across social media. This app was short-listed for an innovation award in 2015 and featured by the Guardian in its apps of the week feature.
Finally in The Bumper Pointless Book App we created an extremely ambitious app combining all the features and functionality of the first two bestselling Pointless Book Apps and added new features such as a Pointless Books Emojic 8 Ball – allowing users to answer their pointless questions using the magic of Emoji!
With more than half a million downloads across the range these apps have been a strong staple of our innovation product development at Blink Publishing and a joy to work on.
